* add typedefs for matrices/vectors with LargeBit

* add -pedantic to CXXFLAGS
* cleanup intricated expressions with && and ||
  which gave warnings because of "missing" parentheses
* fix compile error in NumTraits, apparently discovered
  by -pedantic
